Methodology & Squeeze Score
“Naked Shorts” finds coins with heavy short positioning across the major perpetual-futures venues and ranks them by short-squeeze potential (the GME thesis, expressed in crypto). There is no equity-style “short interest %” in crypto, so crowding is measured from the leverage hubs:
- Funding — persistent negative funding means shorts pay longs (crowded short).
- Long/Short account ratio — retail crowding, from OKX & Bitget (<1 = more shorts than longs).
- Open-interest cover — OI notional ÷ 24h volume (“days to cover”): how much fuel exists to force shorts out.
- Short % supply — the GME metric: estimated short-side open interest ÷ circulating market cap. Over 100% means short notional exceeds the value of all circulating coins (crypto OI is leveraged, so this is an estimate, not an official short-interest figure).
- Momentum — only positive 24h price change feeds the squeeze thesis (short-covering ignition).
- Basis — futures trading at a discount to index spot adds cross-venue short pressure.
Composite score (0–100), weights documented in the API source:
score = 100 × (0.35·funding + 0.20·long/short + 0.20·OI-cover + 0.15·momentum + 0.10·basis)
- Tiers: ≥85 IGNITION · ≥70 SQUEEZE WATCH · ≥55 ELEVATED · else WATCHLIST.
- A missing input contributes 0 to its factor (deterministic).
